Stage 4 of 5
Treatment
Effective Fecal sludge management requires safe treatment that enables beneficial reuse of treated by-products. Two major approaches are available: co-treatment at existing STPs or establishing new FSTPs.
Before Implementing Treatment Facilities
The concerned authority must:
- Quantify Fecal sludge generation based on population, toilet typologies, desludging frequency, and service coverage
- Identify suitable land ensuring compliance with environmental norms, buffer requirements, and local regulations
- Select appropriate treatment technologies based on local conditions, financial viability, and operational capacity
Two Major Approaches
Approach 1
Co-treatment at Existing STPs
Leverage existing wastewater treatment infrastructure for cost-effective treatment through integration into under-utilised STPs.
Approach 2
Establishment of New FSTP
Build new Fecal Sludge Treatment Plants for villages outside the operational clusters of existing co-treatment facilities.
